Environmental Engineering
Knowing What’s in the Ground.
The ground doesn't only bear loads — it holds a record of everything that's been spilled, buried, or drawn through it.
Environmental engineering is the work of understanding that record:
What's present, how it's moving, and what it takes to make a site safe to build on or hand over.
GES brings geotechnical and environmental expertise to the same projects, which matters more than it sounds: contamination, groundwater, and ground behaviour are rarely separate problems. From contaminated-site assessment to in-situ remediation and groundwater studies, we treat the subsurface as one connected system.
Environmental Services
-
-
Soil and groundwater remediation; excavation and removal monitoring.
-
Clay-liner and geomembrane systems for effluent and reservoirs; decommissioning and site reclamation; erosion and sediment control.
Environmental work is a regulatory and ethical discipline as much as a technical one — it has to satisfy authorities and stand up later. GES's principal chaired the Environment & Sustainability Committee of Engineers Canada's Qualifications Board and helped author its national guidelines on site remediation and climate-change adaptation.
That's the standard your file is held to.
Four-Step Environmental Process
Understand the Concern
Every environmental file starts with a reason: a development, a property transaction, a known spill, or a regulator's request. We define that reason first, so the investigation targets the right questions against the right standards.
Sample the Ground
We assess the site directly: soil and groundwater sampling, and the field work needed to find out what's actually present, and how far it has moved.
Assess & Plan
Laboratory analysis defines the nature and extent of any contamination. We turn that into a clear, regulator-ready path forward — management, monitoring, or active remediation.
Remediate & Close
We carry the plan through: remediation, confirmation sampling, and the documentation needed to close the file and satisfy the authorities.
